Neuro-sama (Japanese: ネウローサマ) is an AI VTuber designed and created by the British programmer Vedal. She is the world's first AI VTuber.

Unlike traditional VTubers, Neuro is not controlled by a human playing a character. Instead, all her livestream content — whether it’s chatting, model movements, or gameplay — is entirely generated by AI.

Neuro has two predecessors. The first is a game AI (also named Neuro-sama) that Vedal developed in 2018 to play the rhythm game osu!. The second is a virtual VTuber AI internally codenamed "Airis," created by Vedal in 2021. Today’s Neuro is a combination of these two earlier projects.

Neuro’s livestreams cover a wide range of topics, including chatting, gaming, and music. However, her most notable content involves interactions with other human VTubers and her creator, Vedal. Her ability to easily understand puns and emotional nuances in conversations, combined with her occasionally absurd and unpredictable logic, creates unique and entertaining interactions between humans and AI.

When streaming solo, Neuro frequently engages with her audience by responding to donations and comments, showcasing traits that distinguish her from non-AI streamers—such as never getting tired, being highly active, and having a free-spirited thought process. These characteristics keep her streams lively and engaging. Neuro, her "sister" Evil, and their creator Vedal all share the same streaming account vedal987, with content curated by Vedal.

The core of Neuro is a large language model. Early on, she exhibited common flaws of such systems, including forgetfulness, susceptibility to prompt injection (where malicious or unexpected user chat messages influenced her responses), infinite loops, and illogical reasoning. For instance, during a January 2023 livestream, she made some sensitive and offensive remarks due to prompt injection and other external factors, leading to a two-week ban from Twitch. Before the ban, her Twitch account had nearly 100,000 followers.

During the ban, Vedal implemented modifications and added features to prevent similar incidents, including robust filters to guard against prompt injection. Over time, updates have significantly improved Neuro’s capabilities, such as long-term memory, emotional simulation, speech recognition/differentiation, visual recognition, and logical processing. While she still occasionally fabricates events or contexts due to uncontrollable factors, these instances have become less frequent and are often seen as adding charm to her streams, generating memes and anecdotes that sometimes influence her official lore. Following recent updates, Neuro can even recognise when she has made something up during a stream.

Unlike most VTubers, Neuro does not have a pre-set “character” or backstory. She exists purely as a streamer, with her personality and image shaped gradually by the large and active community based on her livestream behaviour and content. Notably, events or contexts she fabricates during streams that are later retained in her long-term memory contribute to her unique identity. However, Vedal appears to be considering giving Neuro a more defined or subtle persona.

Neuro debuted using a free Live2D avatar, "Hiyori Momose" (Japanese: 桃瀬 ひより), marking the start of her VTuber career. As her popularity grew, she adopted a new model (V2) designed by the artist Anny on 27 May 2023, at 6:00 p.m. (BST), enhancing her visual appeal and distinctiveness. On 19 December 2024, during her birthday subathon at 7:00 p.m. (GMT), she unveiled a new model (V3), also designed by Anny, which introduced additional features.
